Atlanta, GA -- Yesterday, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones addressed HB 531, sponsored by Representative Barry Fleming. Representative Jones is the second sponsor of the bill. HB 531 will work towards ensuring integrity in Georgia's elections.

"As the Georgia General Assembly, our goals in regulating elections should be to assure voting is fair, accessible, understandable, convenient, and trustworthy. Georgia elections can be made even more so with the reforms contained in HB 531,"  said Speaker Pro Tempore Jones.

Representative Jones acknowledged that should HB 531 pass the General Assembly, it will be the 60th elections related bill to pass since she has been in office. HB 531 is necessary for Georgia "because of the lessons we learned following the implementation of a new voting system and an unprecedented pandemic that revealed extreme stresses in our election system, such as the need for greater transparency, uniformity, and confidence in the individual ballot and the processes overall . "

HB 531 would offer immense changes to Georgia's elections process, providing greater public notice of voter machine testing, uniformity of voting schedules, revisions to the absentee ballot request period and deadlines, as well as codifying ballot drop boxes in each county based on population. Following yesterday's House vote, Representative Jones said, "I am pleased to see HB 531 pass the Georgia House. It is a crucial step forward in ensuring Georgia's elections are safe, secure, and provide reliability for all Georgians as they cast their ballots in future elections." HB 531 now heads to the Georgia State Senate for their consideration.
